FORT BELVOIR, Va. -- A DLA Disposition Services employee in Crane, Ind., helped save a Navy fire department nearly $100,000 by asking two firefighters a simple question.
The fire department at Naval Support Activity Crane replaces an average of 700 fire extinguishers annually. The two firefighters were replacing them when Peggy Nowell, an environmental protection specialist and site manager for the DLA Disposition Services field office at Crane, saw them.
"I asked how the base recycled them," Nowell said. "(I was) just curious to see what they were doing."
The firefighters explained that the extinguishers were not recycled. They manually discharged the old fire extinguishers into a collection drum and then transport the empty cylinders to a storage facility. From there the cylinders would end up in a landfill.
Nowell explained to the firefighters that DLA Disposition Services would take the fire extinguishers off their hands.
"They were skeptical at first. Then, when they saw what we could do, they were so relieved and pleased with the service," she said.
By using DLA Disposition Services, Crane's fire department will now save nearly $95,000 a year in labor and disposal costs. The department will also avoid sending several hundred expired cylinders to the local landfill.
