JOINT SECURITY STATION INDIA, Iraq – Infantrymen assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Advise and Assist Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, conducted a six-mile dismounted patrol with soldiers of 2nd Iraqi Army Division Dec. 16.

Soldiers assigned to 2nd Sqdn., 7th Cav. Regt., worked with the Iraqi soldiers through December, teaching basic soldiering skills and infantry drills as part of Operation Leader Forge.

Starting at Combined Check Point Five in Mosul, soldiers walked through the town of Orta Kharah, speaking to the residents while staying alert for any suspicious activity.

“The IA's already conduct their own patrols. We’re just giving them the ‘big picture’ on how to do it properly,” said Sgt. 1st Class Michael Tucker, infantryman and platoon seargeant assigned to Company B.

“We are showing them how to move in an urban area while focusing on their movement techniques and communication skills,” said the native of Washington County, Maryland.

Throughout the patrol, “Garry Owen” soldiers of 2nd Sqdn., 7th Cav. Regt., used various arm and hand signals to communicate with their Iraqi counterparts. U.S. forces taught the Iraqi soldiers the tactical movement techniques as part of their training of basic infantry skills.

As the sun began to set across the horizon, soldiers waited patiently in the town’s fields. They took different positions to observe their surroundings as they worked together.

“Our goal was to take them out on a patrol from day to night and teach them how to set up observation posts,” said Spc. Myrle Polk, an infantryman from Winter Haven, Fla. “We’re helping to better train them so they can train their guys. We want the Iraqis and the Kurds to work together because their one country not just ethnic groups.”

After a few hours passed, the group of combined forces finally headed home. The soldiers trailed through mud as the night air greeted them. Despite the limited amount of light, the structured formations could be seen from the first soldier to the very last.

“This training taught us a lot of things that we didn’t know before,” said Cpl. Saber Ismael, infantryman, 7th Brigade, 2nd Iraqi Army Division. “We learned scouting, how to conduct 360-degree security and setting up ambushes at night. We learned a lot from the American soldiers and now we can do our job and do it well,” said the native of Duhok, Iraq.

Soldiers of the 4th AAB, 1st Cav. Div., from Fort Hood, Texas, assumed their mission to advise, assist, train and mentor Iraqi Security Forces as part of U.S. Division-North in support of Operation New Dawn.
