ON BOARD USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN 76), At Sea-- Senior Enlisted Advisor (SEA) to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJSC), Sgt. Maj. William Gainey, visited USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), April 10, to meet with Sailors and express his gratitude for the job they perform.

Gainey's position was newly created in order to advise the Chairman on matters of professional development of enlisted personnel for a joint environment. He's the first person selected to serve in this position, beginning Oct. 1, 2005.

"The only way for me to be the eyes and ears for [Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff] Gen. Peter Pace, is to once again get out here and see [servicemembers] for myself," said Gainey.

Gainey's on a five-day tour throughout the 5th Fleet area of operation accompanied by U.S. Naval Forces Central Command/U.S. 5th Fleet Master Chief, Chief of Naval Operations Directed Master Chief Kelly Schneider and U.S. Central Command's SEA, Master Sgt. Curt Brownhill.

"Anytime I can come out and see those that are contributing so much to [maritime security operations], makes me proud", Brownhill said.

Reagan, the Navy's newest Nimitz-class nuclear powered aircraft carrier, is currently the flagship of CTF 152. It's deployed in the Arabian Gulf as part of a routine rotation of U.S. maritime forces in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom and is conducting maritime security operations (MSO) while in the region.

MSO set the condition for security and stability in the maritime environment as well as compliment the counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations. These operations deny international terrorists use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons or other material.

During his time on board, Gainey met with Reagan's Command Master Chief, CMDCM (SW/AW) James Delozier, and spoke about the accomplishments of his Sailors.

"I couldn't be more proud of the job they're doing," Delozier said about his crew. "Even though the hours are long and the work can seem overwhelming at times, my Sailors are always motivated to complete the mission at hand."

Though the visit was short, Gainey's visit left a lasting impression with at least one young Sailor.

"He was talking to me while I was on bridge, asking me questions about my job. I was impressed that someone from the Army knows so much about the Navy", said Boatswain Mate Seaman Sean Tabor, a native of Redding Calif. "He gave me a coin; my first one. I'll never forget him".
