CAMP SPANN, Afghanistan -- General David Petraeus, commander of U.S. and ISAF forces in Afghanistan, raised his right hand and swore in 158 re-enlisting soldiers from Regional Command-North Oct. 23, at Camp Spann.

“This is a once in an Army-lifetime opportunity to be re-enlisted by a four-star general,” said Staff Sgt. Julio Martinez, a career counselor with Task Force Mustang, 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, 4th Infantry Division. “He is an incredible individual and has done so much for the soldiers.”

Twenty-five 4th CAB soldiers raised their right hand as the general administered the oath. Out of 107 soldiers from all four regional commands in Afghanistan, who re-enlisted in the first month of the new fiscal year, 82 were unable to attend the ceremony due to mission requirements.

“The greatest reasons I’ve experienced for re-enlisting are the soldiers love the Army, they love the camaraderie and they want to serve,” Martinez said.

“This is my second re-enlistment,” said Staff Sgt. Tamala Sherard, a human resources sergeant with Task Force Dragon, 4th CAB. “I continue to serve because I love my job and the soldiers that I work with.”

The CAB had ranks represented from private first class to staff sergeant, and this was the first re-enlistment for the majority of them.

After the swearing in, the general shook hands and took pictures with each of the re-enlisting soldiers.

“It will never happen again,” remarked Sherard, regarding the ceremony. “To be sworn in by a four-star general on my first deployment was an amazing feeling.”

“Today is about the soldiers.” Petraeus said. “This is my mission for today.”
