    KABUL, AFGHANISTAN

    NATO Training Mission Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan - On Oct. 13, the Afghan National Civil Order Police welcomed Major General Zemarai Paikan as their new commander during a ceremony held at ANCOP Headquarters in Kabul. Paikan replaces Maj. Gen. Ameen Sharif who, as part of the Ministry of Interior’s recently established rotation policy, will be taking command of 707th Zone in Helmand province.

Deputy Minister of Interior Munir Mangal praised both commanders for their leadership, but reserved the highest honor for the men standing in formation.

“All of ANCOP, in all parts of Afghanistan, have brought security and peace,” Mangal said. “In fact, everywhere I go, people are always talking about the success of ANCOP and I will never forget this.”

“For you men have gained the trust of the people, most notably in Marjah and Helmand, and, in a very difficult situation, you have succeeded beyond measure. That’s why you are the honor of our country,” he said.

For the outgoing commander, Sharif, it was a moment to reflect.

"I am proud of ANCOP. When we started, we had one room. Now, we stand at 7,000 strong,” he said. "I thank all of you; you are always on the front line. You never give up. You are the best of the best."

"Where ever I go, I will wear this uniform with pride," Sharif said.

Taking the ANCOP reigns, Paikan said, "I appreciate the trust given to me. I am ready to get the job done."

Paikan leaves his position as Afghan National Army Deputy Chief of Staff for Ground Forces.

ANCOP are the Afghan National Police’s elite force. ANCOP units are a key to the “hold” portion of the strategic plan of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and International Security Assistance Force, to clear, hold, and build contested areas.
