Critical repairs underway at Olmsted Locks and Dam
Critical repair work is underway at Olmsted Locks and Dam in Olmsted, Illinois, one of the busiest and most important navigation facilities in the U.S. inland waterways system.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District, in partnership with the Regional Rivers Repair Fleet (R3F), is working to return the facility’s land chamber to service as quickly and safely as possible.
The land chamber has been closed to navigation traffic since mid-August while the team addresses a deficient anchorage pin discovered during routine preventative maintenance inspections. The river chamber has remained open and operational throughout the closure.
Olmsted Locks and Dam is a critical hub in the nation’s inland navigation system, helping move millions of tons of cargo each year along the Ohio River. Because of the volume of commercial traffic that passes through the facility, maintaining reliable lock operations is essential to keeping goods moving efficiently throughout the region and supporting the nation’s supply chain.
“The safety and reliability of our navigation infrastructure is a top priority,” said Brad Stout, Louisville District Locks and Dam chief. “We are working hard to complete this repair as efficiently as possible and return the land chamber to service for our industry partners.”
During preventative maintenance inspections, USACE staff discovered a deficient gudgeon pin on the land chamber’s lower miter gate. The gudgeon pin is a critical component in the anchorage system of the miter gate. Louisville District Engineers assessed the risks and determined to take the land chamber out of service until repairs could be made.
The Louisville District immediately coordinated with the R3F to identify available floating plant assets and crews that could support the repair while minimizing impacts to other ongoing and upcoming major maintenance projects throughout the region.
Once the repair team and equipment were on site, crews began work to replace the anchorage associated with the land chamber middle wall lower miter gate leaf.
Work began Sept. 9, and the Louisville District anticipates completing the repair by Sept. 21.
Following completion of the current repair, additional planned maintenance will take place at Olmsted Locks and Dam beginning in October. From Oct. 5 through mid-November, the river chamber will be closed while the Regional Heavy Capacity Fleet performs similar repairs to the river chamber’s miter gate anchorage, filling and emptying valves, and dewatering the chamber. During that time, all navigation traffic will be routed through the land chamber.
Therefore, the timing of the current repair is especially important to maintaining navigation reliability of Olmsted Locks and the inland river system. Returning the land chamber to service before the planned river chamber closure will ensure the facility continues to provide a navigation route while the river chamber undergoes this major maintenance.
These repairs are part of USACEs’ ongoing efforts to maintain the critical infrastructure that keeps the nation’s inland waterways operating safely and efficiently.
