FORT IRWIN, Calif.—Mission and Installation Contracting Command Soldiers supported Army transformation efforts during the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, divestiture at Fort Irwin from Aug. 11 to Sept. 5.
Over 21 days, Soldiers from the 918th Contracting Battalion (CBn) provided contracting support as the brigade divested its remaining M1A2 Abrams tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles as part of its transition from an armored brigade combat team (ABCT) to a Stryker brigade combat team (SBCT). The contracting effort included crane services required to lift, position and prepare designated vehicles for turn-in.
The Mission and Installation Contracting Command (MICC) has three brigades, two field directorate offices, 34 contracting activities and nine battalions. The 918th CBn is one of four battalions under the MICC’s 418th Contracting Support Brigade (CSB). The CSB also comprises nine MICC offices, including MICC-Fort Irwin.
“The close coordination between the 918th CBn and our partners at MICC–Fort Irwin was vital to the mission’s success,” said Lt. Col. James Ko, 918th battalion commander. “Their daily liaison and responsive support, delivering quality assurance and critical life‑support contracts for ice and sanitation, exemplified the ‘One Team, One Fight’ ethos across the 418th CSB.”
Staff Sgt. Elicia Bonilla and Staff Sgt. Nicholas Huffman, contracting specialists from 918th Cbn, performed many duties vital to the success of the contracting operation, including hands-on technical inspections to document serviceability, overseeing contract performance and resolving key regulatory compliance issues to keep the mission on schedule. Their major operational contributions included executing a rapid contract modification for heavy‑lift crane support, coordinating emergency life‑support assets such as field latrines and generators, and finalizing logistics support for both the divestiture and required troop movements.
“The role we have in Army transformation is very fulfilling,” Bonilla said. “We ensured the services and assets met the requirements seamlessly so the BCT could keep moving forward with this historical transition and remain focused on Soldier and unit readiness.”
The MICC’s contribution to the divestiture mission supports the Army’s transformation of formations designed for greater mobility, connectivity and logistical efficiency while helping posture the 4th Infantry Division for rapid power projection in the Indo-Pacific region. The contracting support to the BCT reflects the MICC Campaign Plan priorities of readiness, mission execution and transformation by delivering effective contracting solutions that enable operational forces to adapt, modernize and maintain readiness for emerging requirements.
