MUQDADIYAH, Iraq (February 20, 2006) -- Aviation Soldiers are "dropping the ball" for Iraqi children here to ease minds of the locals near Forward Operating Base Normandy.

Soldiers in the 57th Medical Company from Ft. Bragg, have been dropping soccer balls, candy and school supplies from their helicopters for the past few days.

The helicopters the medical company use will randomly shoot out harmless flares, and the flight crews were concerned the flares were startling the locals and could be perceived as an attack.

"It shows that we, the aviation community, understand that low flying, which we have to do, startles a lot of the livestock around here," said Staff Sgt. Jospeh Lemons, a crew member of the 57th Medical Company.

Not only has the effort shown the friendliness of the medical company's helicopters, but also aids disadvantaged children and families.

"It shows we are concerned with the infrastructure and the morale of the community," said Lemons.

The crew has dropped their manna to the people below five times over the past couple of weeks.

"We are getting them a piece of the western culture that they don't always get," said Lemons.
