South Carolina National Guard Fields Advanced HH-60M Black Hawk
MCENTIRE JOINT NATIONAL GUARD BASE, S.C.– The South Carolina Army National Guard is enhancing its mission readiness and life-saving capabilities with the arrival of the first of three technologically advanced HH-60M Black Hawk helicopter.
U.S. Army Major Stephen Johnson, Army Aviation Support Facility One commander credited the success of this acquisition to the South Carolina Army National Guard aviation team. “This milestone belongs to our maintainers, pilots, crew chiefs, and staff who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to prepare our facility, logistics, and training pipelines for this transition.”
This transition continues a legacy that began in October 1986 when the South Carolina Army National Guard was the first in the Army National Guard to field the original UH-60A Black Hawk, replacing the Vietnam-era UH-1 “Huey.” That introduction represented a generational leap in speed and mission capability, establishing the Black Hawk as a cornerstone of South Carolina Army Aviation.
Key upgrades include a digital glass cockpit, more powerful engines, advanced composite rotor blades, and integrated aircraft health-monitoring systems. These improvements provide aircrews with increased situational awareness, improved aircraft performance, and greater reliability, which are critical during demanding day, night, and reduced-visibility operations.
"The modern avionics and navigation systems provide our crews with greater situational awareness when transporting patients, medical personnel, and specialized equipment," said Johnson. "The improved power and rotor systems give us enhanced performance, which is crucial for our life-saving missions."
The modernization also strengthens the South Carolina National Guard’s ability to respond to domestic emergencies. The state's Army aviation assets are routinely called upon to support disaster response, search and rescue, and other state-side missions, all while maintaining readiness for federal missions around the world.
The transition to the HH-60M Black Hawk ensure South Carolina Army Aviation remains equipped with a modern, reliable, and interoperable aircraft, ready to support both the nation and the citizens of South Carolina for decades to come.
