INDEPENDENCE, MO - “Delivering tomorrow’s small caliber ammunition lethality today” is the guiding principle behind ongoing transformation at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant (LCAAP) in Independence, Missouri. The U.S. Army is one step closer to bringing its next-generation manufacturing vision to life. On July 22, construction crews celebrated a dry-in ceremony for the 6.8mm Cartridge Manufacturing Facility at LCAAP. This ceremony represents a critical milestone meaning the building’s exterior shell is now complete and weather-tight.

From groundbreaking to rapid vertical construction, the new 6.8mm Cartridge Manufacturing Facility represents the most significant small-caliber manufacturing modernization effort overseen by the Portfolio Acquisition Executive Agile Sustainment and Ammunition (PAE AS&A).

A Historic Foundation

The journey to this milestone officially began on February 5, 2025, with a historic groundbreaking ceremony. The event echoed the plant's storied origins; the last major groundbreaking of this magnitude occurred in 1940 when then Senator Harry S. Truman paved the way for LCAAP's first manufacturing unit. Today, Lake City remains the largest producer of small-caliber ammunition within the Department of War, with the ability to produce and deliver over one billion rounds annually.

By the Numbers: Construction Metrics

Seventeen months after breaking ground, the recent dry-in ceremony highlights the massive scale and rapid pace of a project vital to modernizing the Army's organic industrial base:

• Footprint: Over 400,000-square-foot facility designed to house state-of-the-art manufacturing systems that will manufacture, load, assemble, and pack the Army’s premier 6.8mm family of ammunition.
• Labor: Nearly 50 local businesses are involved in the construction with skilled trades having contributed over 700,000 labor hours to date.
• Materials: Crews have placed over 47,000 cubic yards of concrete, enough to fill over 14 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Securing Battlefield Overmatch

As the new facility moves past the dry-in phase, the project looks toward completion of key building support systems followed by installation of advanced production equipment beginning in 2028. The mission remains clear: the strength of the U.S. Army depends on the organic industrial base. By manufacturing and delivering the new 6.8mm cartridge, LCAAP and PAE AS&A will deliver increased range, enhanced accuracy, and lethality, ensuring the U.S. Warfighter maintains a decisive overmatch on any future battlefield.
