NAVAL AIR STATION SIGONELLA, Italy – Amongst various environmental factors the island of Sicily faces, Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella is playing its role in promoting environmental sustainability and compliance standards with its “Keep Sigonella Beautiful” initiative. Celebrating its one-year anniversary with a base wide, joint force clean up, Aug. 20-21, 2026.
The beautification campaign was founded by U.S. Navy Capt. Daniel Martins, commanding officer, NAS Sigonella, to raise awareness amongst the wide array of personnel who work onboard. Including objectives to adhere to environmental and host nation compliance standards, encourage ownership of shared spaces and assigned areas, and overall enhance wellness practices that instill responsibility and pride in the workspace across the installations.
Service members stationed onboard have shown their support through implementing various base wide and command specific clean up events held periodically since its inception. Contributions include sweeping sidewalks, clearing foliage and trash off the ground and ensuring appropriate sorting of recyclable and trash materials are followed.
“While serving on NAS Sigonella, each service member, their families, and personnel deserve to live and work on a world class base,” said Capt. Martins. “We are focused and proactive on delivering that promise with our ‘Keep Sigonella Beautiful’ initiative and will continue to promote ownership and encourage pride in our home away from home.”
With recent volcanic activity from Mt. Etna and its eight-day eruption stint, NAS Sigonella airfield operators worked around the clock to ensure operations remained minimally impacted. In addition to employing standard mitigation and safety protocols, such as ensuring proper personal protective equipment (PPE) practices are met, the recent base wide clean up went above and beyond with a joint force response to further support their airfield counterparts.
Armed with push brooms, water trucks, and heavy sweepers, volunteers from several tenant commands worked alongside one another to clear aircraft parking aprons and taxiways on the airfield. The collaborative effort showcased the tight integration between Navy personnel, Marine rotational forces, Air Force logistics teams, and Italian base partners.
"Our tactical flights depend on a clean, safe runway to deploy at a moment's notice,” said Ensign Daniel Galinski, air traffic control facility officer, NAS Sigonella. “Working alongside our Italian hosts and joint-service partners was a powerful reminder of how we operate as one team here.”
NAS Sigonella provides consolidated operational, command and control, administrative, and advanced logistical support to U.S. and NATO forces. The installation’s strategic location enables U.S., allied, and partner nation forces to deploy and respond as required, ensuring security and stability throughout Europe, Africa and Central Asia.
