JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska – The Eleventh Air Force has released the name of the Air Force member who perished after a civilian-contracted aircraft mishap at Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site Airport, approximately 450 miles west-southwest of Anchorage, Alaska, Aug. 20, 2026.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic aircraft accident near Cape Newenham on Thursday, 20 August 2026 and the loss of 2nd Lt. Leah Borsich, our joint partners, contractor teammates, and aircrew,” said Col. Timothey Meerstein, commander of Pacific Air Forces Regional Support Center. “Lt. Borsich was a positive leader who brought tremendous energy and enthusiasm to our command. She led with professionalism, compassion and purpose, and her presence strengthened the bonds between the people around her. She made a lasting impact on our team, and we are grateful for her service and commitment to our nation.
“We also mourn the loss of our Army and contractor teammates and extend our deepest appreciation to the Security Aviation aircrew, whose professionalism and dedication are vital to our mission. Their service and sacrifice will not be forgotten,” Meerstein continued. The name is being released following a 24-hour waiting period after all next of kin notifications were completed, in accordance with Department of War policy.

“Our deepest sympathies are with the families, friends, teammates and loved ones affected by this tragedy. In this difficult time, we stand together in honoring those we have lost, supporting one another and remaining committed to the mission they served,” Meerstein added.
The incident is currently under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board. The Alaska State Troopers will release the names of the non-Department of War affiliated persons.
