SALT LAKE CITY — Members of the 211th Aviation Regiment, Utah Army National Guard, loaded 300 care packages onto military vehicles at the State Capitol Wednesday, preparing them for delivery to the families of deployed Utah service members after Utah leaders and local businesses gathered to launch the donation effort. Gov. Spencer Cox joined the Utah Department of Veterans and Military Affairs, the Utah Food Industry Association, Associated Food Stores and Zions Bank for the event. Volunteers transferred the packages, filled with Utah-made products, from an Associated Food Stores semitruck onto the waiting Guard vehicles for distribution to military families across the state. "We want them to come home. We recognize that their families are sacrificing, and so here we have Zions Bank and we have Associated Foods and the Utah Food Industry all stepping forward in big ways to help those families," Cox said. Gary Harter, director of the Utah Department of Veterans and Military Affairs, said the donations reach beyond what families expect. "They certainly miss them for being gone, but there's other aspects as well. So, these types of donations, the type of food makes a meaningful difference," Harter said. The donation is part of Flavors of Utah, an annual Pioneer Day initiative that sends Utah-made products to the state's congressional delegation in Washington, D.C., while funding community giveback projects at home. The 211th Aviation Regiment, which flies the AH-64 Apache and UH-60 Black Hawk from the Army Aviation Support Facility in West Jordan, regularly supports missions beyond flight operations, including past state emergencies such as the 2011 Weber County flood response. Family support is one of several standing missions for Utah National Guard units between drill periods, alongside natural disaster response and community outreach. Organizers said the 300 care packages will reach military families throughout Utah in the coming days, a reminder that their sacrifice is not forgotten while their service members serve overseas.
