GRAFENWOEHR, Germany – Combined Endeavor 2010, the world’s largest communication and information systems exercise concluded, Sept. 16, at the Joint Multinational Simulation Center at the Grafenwoehr Training Area in Grafenwoehr, Germany.
During the exercise, more 40 nations and about 1400 participants tested computer systems and networks to ensure to communication, collaboration and support, which allows the countries and non-government agencies to respond more rapidly and efficiently to crisis and natural disaster.
“The exercise was very successful,” said 1st Lt. Henrik Segar, a member of the Swedish army who has participated in Combined Endeavor since 2000. “It improves each year, and I enjoy having all of the nations together in one area. I’ll bring home increased knowledge and experience."
“It was helpful to have the site prepared in advance” said Segar. He and his fellow soldiers were required to bring very little equipment.
"We have an existing facility here for participants to fall inside, instead of countries having to travel and stand-up a facility to support the exercise," said Capt. Petero Lole, JMSC’s lead planner. "If you look around this room — all these computers, tables, chairs and projectors, most countries didn't have to bring those things here."
The set-up is easy and shipping-costs are minimal, which saves the countries time and money, said Lole.
Segar and Mclean both said that they would like to participate in Combined Endeavor next year.
“The purpose and real value of the exercise is to share knowledge, over-come challenges and teach each other to solve the problems of international interoperability” said Lt. Col. Scott Mclean, Canadian Army.
