CAMP FOSTER, Japan (May 1, 2026) - Over 50 service members from across the island of Okinawa completed a three-day course for Security Augmentation Force training that culminated today at Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan.
Security Augmentation Force training, also known as SAF, provides the attendees basic principles and skills necessary to execute the duties that come with providing base security. This training is a Marine Corps Base Camp Butler specific requirement, managed and facilitated by the Marine Corps Provost Marshal's Office located at Camp Foster.
"What we're doing here today is something called Security Augmentation Force training, or SAF training. This is our fourth iteration of the year,” said U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Jacob Rafael, the training chief for Marine Corps Base Camp Butler Provost Marshal’s Office. “It's a three-day block of training where we give them the foundational basics of: entry control points, vehicle control points, access control as a whole, familiarization with ID cards that allow the access into the installations, and give them some reps in traffic control."
U.S. Marines and Soldiers from six different installations completed this course with a culminating event that consists of taking a written exam covering oleoresin capsicum, widely known as OC spray, receiving level one exposure, which is direct contact of the spray from the canister on to the face, then conduct five fight-through stations directly after being exposed.
“We give them a tool at the end of the day. When camp guard gets activated, or they have to go to an increased FPCON, they have this training already completed so they can use the tool if it has to be used,” said Rafael.
The graduates will return to their respective units, where they are able to be called upon to support base security.
