Story by Sgt. 1st Class Dae McDonald

Office of the Chief, Army Reserve

After building a successful career as a software engineer at two of the world’s most influential tech companies, Google and Amazon, Johnny Pillacela had already achieved what many consider the pinnacle of professional success. He was solving complex problems, working in high-performance environments, and contributing to innovation at the corporate level. But for Pillacela, something was missing.

“I started to feel a strong desire to build something of my own and have a more direct impact,” he said.

That drive led him to launch his own web development company, where he now helps clients grow while supporting his family. Yet even with entrepreneurial success, a yearning rooted in service remained.

That desire ultimately led the Elizabeth, New Jersey native to the United States Army Reserve.

Pillacela’s decision to serve is not a departure from his civilian success, it’s an extension of it. The skills he sharpened in the tech industry – problem solving, adaptability, teamwork, and operating under pressure – translates directly into military readiness.

“In software engineering, you’re constantly troubleshooting, thinking ahead, and working with a team to achieve a shared goal,” he explained. “Those same principles apply in the Army Reserve.”

This alignment between civilian expertise and military capability is central to the Chief of Army Reserve, Lt. Gen. Robert D. Harter’s priorities. As the Army Reserve continues to transform for the future fight, it is leveraging the unique strengths of men and women who bring real-world experience into uniform. Pillacela embodies that vision as a highly skilled professional, ready to contribute to both national defense and the economy.

Now, as a new recruit and future human resource specialist, Pillacela is focused on mastering his role and contributing to the Army Reserve’s mission. While committed to growing his personal business, he sees his service as part of something much bigger.

“Being ‘Twice the Citizen,’ means contributing to both your local community and your country,” he said. “As a business owner, I’m creating value and supporting my family. As a Soldier, I’m developing discipline, leadership and serving a larger mission.”

The strength of the Army Reserve lies not just in its formations, but in the diverse experiences and talents of those who choose to serve. Pillacela’s story highlights the component’s commitment to investing in Soldiers’ civilian carers and aligning them with military service.
