MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII, Hawaii – U.S. Marine Corps 1st. Lt. Benjamin C. Currey, a platoon commander with 3rd Littoral Combat Team, 3rd Marine Littoral Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, was selected by the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) to serve as a military mentor. The program, which hosts high school students from across the country, was held in Washington, D.C., March 7-14, 2026.
The USSYP is a highly competitive, selection-based program held annually each spring by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation in cooperation with bipartisan Senate leadership. Currey was chosen as one of only seventeen commissioned officers from across the Department of War, with participating mentors ranging in rank from first lieutenants to lieutenant colonels.
“Being in this program is an absolute honor,” said Currey. “Our purpose is to facilitate an understanding of the nation’s intent and Department of War’s mission to these young Americans. We put a name to the face for the officers that are involved, whether they’re Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors or Marines.”
Currey’s interest in the Senate Youth Program predates his military and collegiate career. Growing up near the Naval War College, he was inspired by the professionalism exemplified by senior Navy and Marine Corps officers in his community, whom he viewed as icons of integrity and discipline.
Established in 1962 by the sons of journalism pioneer William Randolph Hearst, the program recognizes excellence in America’s youth. The program is designed to increase student awareness of the interrelationships between the three branches of government, the responsibilities of federally elected and appointed officials, and the vital importance of democratic decision-making. Featuring student delegates from all 50 states, the program ensures that the next generation of civilian leaders possess a nuanced understanding of the nation’s foundational principles.
For Currey, the experience represents a “full circle” moment. He first participated in the program as a high school student where he had the opportunity to meet the President, Vice President, and various U.S. Senators. At the time, he did not anticipate returning to the program a decade later in a mentorship capacity.
“We all collectively work together to try and build a warm relationship with these teens who have potential in future government related service, and we pass down what we know to ensure that the fundamentals and the future of this country are in good hands,” concluded Currey.
Currey’s selection for the highly competitive and conspicuous program underscores the excellence and high standards expected of all Marines assigned to 3rd MLR. His proven leadership as an infantry platoon commander and commitment to duty as a Marine, make him uniquely qualified to serve as a mentor for young professionals aspiring to careers in public service at all levels in the future.
