“It’s about proving that standards matter and that the path to excellence is rarely linear,” said 1st Sgt. Matthew Crain, president of the Redleg Chapter of the Sgt. Audie Murphy Club (SAMC), during the induction ceremony for Senior Drill Sergeant (SDS) Sgt. 1st Class Tyrone Askew on Feb. 27, 2026.
“I watched a good NCO transform into a sharper, more deliberate, more competent leader — not because he passed a board, but because he refused to let failure define him,” he said.
Crain also outlined the rigorous selection process, emphasizing that membership is not simply an award, but a continued commitment to lead from the front and care for Soldiers.
Askew was inducted into the SAMC during the ceremony, recognizing his leadership, professionalism and commitment to excellence. The event brought together leaders, peers and family to honor his achievement and reaffirm the standards associated with membership in the prestigious organization.
The guest speaker, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Sill Sgt. Maj. Jared English, praised Askew’s perseverance and excellence, and encouraged him to continue being an inspiration.
“You are not just a great leader, but also a mentor, a counselor and an advocate for our Soldiers and their families,” he said. “Continue to lead with courage, compassion and an unwavering commitment to excellence.” Askew also addressed attendees, reflecting on the mentors, soldiers and family members who supported him throughout his career.
The Sgt. Audie Murphy Club is a prestigious organization for noncommissioned officers who demonstrate exemplary leadership, performance and dedication to Soldier welfare. Named for Audie Murphy, the most decorated American Soldier of World War II, the club honors his legacy of courage, selfless service and unwavering commitment to fellow Soldiers.
Established in 1986 at Fort Hood, Texas, the Sgt. Audie Murphy Club recognizes noncommissioned officers who exemplify leadership characterized by personal concern for the needs, training, development and welfare of Soldiers. Membership is earned through a competitive process that includes a board appearance and evaluation of a candidate’s performance, knowledge and leadership abilities.
