National Guard Soldier Saves Life Twice While Supporting D.C. Safe and Beautiful Mission

WASHINGTON, D.C.— U.S. Army Spc. Darrion Rackley, an Information Technology Specialist assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 178th Field Artillery, is supporting the Joint Task Force–District of Columbia as part of the “D.C. Safe and Beautiful” mission. The mission brings together service members and community partner agencies in a coordinated effort to enhance public safety and improve neighborhoods throughout the nation’s capital.

Although his military specialty centers on information technology, Rackley plays a critical role on the ground, maintaining a constant presence during daily patrols across multiple sectors of Washington, D.C. His vigilance has helped discourage criminal activity—and, more importantly, save lives.

Rackley set out on patrol on what should have been a day of celebration—his birthday. Earlier that day, Rackley and his team purchased and distributed food for individuals experiencing homelessness in their assigned patrol area. Shortly after their good deed, a bystander alerted the team to an unresponsive male nearby who appeared to be suffering a medical emergency.

Rackley arrived first on scene and immediately recognized signs of a drug overdose. Without hesitation, he administered Narcan and began CPR. His swift and decisive actions resulted in the individual’s successful resuscitation and recovery. Remarkably, just five days later, Rackley would save the same individual’s life again after responding to another overdose in the same sector of the city.

Despite encouragement from his leadership to take time off following the incidents, Spc. Rackley has remained committed to serving the community.

“I don’t like not being on the mission,” Rackley said. ”It makes me feel like I could be doing something more.”

Outside of his military duties, Rackley enjoys photography and videography and continues to invest in lifesaving skills. He is CPR certified as a lifeguard, extending his dedication to public service beyond the uniform.

The impact of Rackley’s actions became unmistakably clear when the man whose life he saved asked a simple question after being revived: “Where’s the guy who saved me?” It is a question few will ever hear—and one that speaks volumes about the quiet heroism demonstrated by Rackley in service to the people of Washington, D.C.
