18th Wing welcomes JAAGA for tour and awards ceremony

KADENA AIR BASE, Japan — Members of the Japan-America Air Force Goodwill Association visited the 18th Wing for a flightline tour, mission briefing and the wing’s annual awards ceremony Feb. 18, 2026.

Established in 1996, JAAGA works to strengthen U.S.–Japan relations by promoting activities that build mutual understanding and friendship between the U.S. Air Force and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. The association includes former JASDF members, civilian leaders, corporate representatives, honorary members, and former Fifth Air Force and Pacific Air Forces commanders.

“For decades, JAAGA has had a strong relationship with the 18th Wing, consistently donating to community outreach events like the Kadena Special Olympics," said Sayaka Higa, 18th Wing Public Affairs community engagement lead. "Furthermore, JAAGA has worked closely with both the U.S. Air Force and JASDF to uplift and recognize Airmen at the JAAGA Awards Ceremony.”

The 18th Wing leadership team hosted the visit, which featured a mission briefing by U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. John Gallemore, 18th Wing commander. During the briefing, Gallemore highlighted Kadena’s diverse mission set, its role in the defense of Japan, and ongoing efforts to minimize operational impacts on the local community.

JAAGA members also toured the Kadena flightline, where they viewed an MQ-9 Reaper and spoke with representatives from the 319th Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron about the drone’s unique capabilities.

“I am thankful that I was able to visit Kadena Air Base today,” said Lt. Gen. (ret.) Toshimichi Nagaiwa, JAAGA tour leader. “I also would like to express, on behalf of JAAGA, that we are honored to be invited to the 18th Wing Annual Awards Ceremony and are looking forward to the JAAGA Award Ceremony this March.”

By attending the annual award event, JAAGA members had the unique opportunity to see Kadena team members being recognized for their accomplishments. Engagements like this strengthen ties between the Okinawan community and U.S. service members while reinforcing the broader U.S.-Japan alliance.
