The Tinker Men’s Varsity volleyball team is in San Antonio this weekend to compete for the title of CONUS champions in the continental United States division this week after their victory in the Tornado Alley Central Regional Tournament in January.
The women’s and coed teams will be participating in the invitational tournament.
The teams from Tinker are a mix of civilian, Air Force and Navy personnel, and their dependents.
“I’m proud of this team for the chemistry we have built in such little time,” said Tinker Tornadoes Founder, Staff Sgt. Austin Elm. “I hope the team shows out and performs the way we always have.”
For these athletes, volleyball has become a keystone of comprehensive Airmen fitness which encompasses mental, social, spiritual, and physical wellbeing.
“Team sports offer a unique combination of physical, emotional, and social benefits that promote mental health,” said Maj. Meghan Witten, 72nd Operational Medical Readiness Squadron mental health flight commander.
Witten said that team sports serve as a powerful tool for improving overall fitness and mission effectiveness.
“Regular practices, games, and team commitments provide structure and routine, which are beneficial for mental health, particularly for individuals struggling with depression or anxiety,” Witten said.
Volleyball isn’t the only option for Airmen who want to get involved in sports around Tinker. Softball, basketball, racquetball, tennis, pickleball, soccer, and flag football are all available around base. For more information contact the Sports Director, (405) 734-5607.
