Commentary: Give Airmen and Sailors a ride

Team Tinker, our resilience during the recent winter storm was a powerful reminder that we are stronger together. The teamwork and dedication each of you demonstrated were instrumental in overcoming the significant challenges we faced and ensuring the mission continued without fail. As we navigated the storm, many of us had the benefit of a personal vehicle for a safe and warm commute. However, it's important to recognize that some of our most junior Airmen and Sailors do not yet have this resource. For many, Tinker is their first duty station and their first home away from family, and vehicle ownership is not always an immediate possibility.

To address this, we are proud to support the "Stronger Together Carpool" program, also known as the "Give Airmen a Ride" program. This initiative provides a structured way for personnel with available transportation to assist fellow service members who need a ride. I encourage everyone to consider volunteering to help a teammate get to and from their place of duty. You can sign up to be a driver or request assistance through the official page:

While it is a supervisor's responsibility to ensure their members have a reliable plan to commute, this program offers another valuable avenue for our team to support one another. The benefits extend beyond simple convenience—it ensures our Airmen and Sailors are safe from the elements, reduces the risk of vehicle/pedestrian accidents, and restores valuable personal time. The reality is that some members walk up to three miles each way to their duty location. This program is a direct solution to that challenge.

This initiative was championed by one of our own. Airman Vallyn Bilbo of the 72nd Operations Support Squadron experienced this transportation challenge firsthand. After walking for over two hours to the Gott gate late one night because rideshare services could not access the base, she was inspired to act. Airman Bilbo developed the driver/rider matching system that now powers this program. Her innovation is an outstanding example of looking out for your wingman, and I was honored to present her with my coin for her exceptional efforts.

This program directly supports my priority to connect and strengthen Team Tinker and our families. Thank you for everything you do. I am proud to serve alongside you and look forward to what we will accomplish together.
