    NAS Sigonella Hosts Vice Chairman of the Joints Chief of Staff

    NAVAL AIR STATION SIGONELLA, Italy – The Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Marine Corps. Gen. Christopher J. Mahoney, visited Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella on the last stop of the USO Holiday Tour 2025 spanning across key U.S. military installations in the U.S. Central Command, U.S. Africa Command and U.S. European Command areas of operation. Gen. Mahoney engaged with essential leadership onboard NAS Sigonella, December 5 and 6, 2025.

    During the visit, the Vice Chairman received mission briefs highlighting NAS Sigonella’s strategic role as the “Hub of the Med” in supporting U.S., allied, and partner operations across Europe, Africa, and the Central Command area of responsibility. Leaders also discussed the U.S. Navy’s mission in Italy, emphasizing strong cooperation with the Italian military and government and recognizing the dedication of the service members and families stationed here.

    In addition to being greeted by the Italian Air Force Col. Stefano Spreafico, 41st Wing and Sigonella Air Base Commander, and NAS Sigonella leadership, Capt. Dan Martins, commanding officer, Cmdr. Daniel Morreira, executive officer, and Command Master Chief Joshua Lundy, the Vice Chairman shared an engagement luncheon at the Ney award winning galley, Ristorante Bella Etna, with senior tenant command leadership aboard NAS Sigonella. Attendees included Brig. Gen. John B. Creel, commander, North Atlantic Treaty Organization Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Force (NISRF), Capt. Brian Schneider, commodore, Task Force (CTF) 67, Capt. Aaron Frank, executive officer, Navy Medicine Readiness and Training (NMRTC), Capt. Christopher Weiss, executive officer, NMRTC, Capt. Daniel Vetsch, commanding officer, Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center (FLCSI), and Cmdr. Aaron Harpel, executive officer, FLCSI.

    While touring operational and quality of life facilities, Gen. Mahoney engaged directly with service members representing the joint and NATO team stationed at the installations.

    “NAS Sigonella plays a critical role in enabling our joint force, allies, and partners to respond rapidly to emerging challenges,” said Mahoney. “What I saw today underscores the professionalism, capability, and dedication of the men and women who serve here. Their work matters, and it directly contributes to global security.”

    Capt. Martins thanked the Vice Chairman for taking the time to meet with personnel, speak with senior joint officials, and observe the installation’s operational capabilities firsthand.

    “We are honored to host Gen. Mahoney and showcase the remarkable missions carried out here every day,” Martins said. “Our Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Soldiers, Guardians, and civilian workforce’s commitment ensures we meet operational requirements with excellence. This rings especially true during the holidays while serving overseas and away from loved ones. We commend and recognize those on the watch, allowing the rest of us to enjoy this time of year knowing we are covered.”

    NAS Sigonella provides consolidated operational, command and control, administrative, and advanced logistical support to U.S. and NATO forces. The installation’s strategic location enables U.S., allied, and partner nation forces to deploy and respond as required, ensuring security and stability throughout Europe, Africa and Central Asia.
