Expeditionary Medicine Sailors demonstrated adaptability and readiness during a series of dynamic training scenarios at the Expeditionary Resuscitative Surgical System (ERSS) and Expeditionary Resuscitative Care System (ERCS) course conducted by Naval Expeditionary Medicine Warfighter Development Center (NEMWDC), Oct. 13-23, 2025.
The course, designed to prepare expeditionary medical personnel to operate in austere and unpredictable resource constrained environments, challenged the Sailors to rapidly form cohesive teams and deliver lifesaving care under pressure.
“Adaptability is the foundation of expeditionary medicine,” said Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Jordan Turner, ERSS Program Manager. “We train our Sailors to perform under uncertainty—to step into any situation, assess, and execute with the resources they have.”
Throughout the week, trainees responded to simulated mass-casualty events, conducted trauma resuscitations under red-light conditions, and performed surgical procedures inside mobile field facilities. Despite unfamiliar team compositions, participants sustained a high level of activity and responsiveness, executing tasks quickly, efficiently, and continuously, as would be expected in real-world deployments.
“The reality is, you may not deploy with the same people you trained with,” said Turner “This kind of training forces you to adjust, trust your teammates, and rely on shared skills rather than familiarity.”
The ERSS and ERCS courses are integral components of Navy Medicine’s expeditionary readiness pipeline, preparing Expeditionary Medicine personnel to support distributed maritime operations and joint task forces worldwide. Each iteration reinforces the importance of adaptability—not just as a skill, but as a mindset.
“This training proves that no matter how last-minute or unpredictable the circumstances, our Sailors can come together and deliver,” said Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Kristopher Ferreira, NEMWDC instructor. “That’s what expeditionary medicine is all about.”
NEMWDC, located at Camp Pendleton, serves as Navy Medicine’s center of excellence for Expeditionary Medicine training. The command develops, delivers, and sustains advanced, scenario-based training to ensure medical personnel are ready to support combat operations across the globe. NEMWDC’s programs strengthen warfighter readiness and prepare Sailors to provide critical care anytime, anywhere.
