JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. – U.S. Air Force Military Working Dogs Yoci and Edo, both German shepherds who have been serving at Andrews since 2019, retired during a ceremony at the base theater, Oct. 22, 2025.
Yoci was born Jan. 25, 2017, and started training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, in June 2018. After becoming certified as a patrol and explosive detector dog in June 2019, he was assigned to Andrews.
Yoci logged 2,500 utilization hours, 3,000 vehicle searches and supported 1,100 distinguished visitors, National Airborne Operations Center missions, presidential and vice-presidential movements..
He was adopted by his handler, Staff Sgt. Jesse F. Poe, 316th Security Support Squadron.
Edo was born Aug. 8, 2017, and started training in October 2018 at Lackland. He was assigned to Andrews in December 2019 after certification as a patrol and explosive detector.
Edo executed more than 2,000 hours of explosive detection, searched more than 15,000 vehicles and supported 1,300 DV sweeps, and 100 NAOC missions.
He was adopted by his handler Staff Sgt. Matthew J. Grenier, 316th SSPTS.
Military working dogs typically serve for eight to 10 years and retire mostly due to medical issues or their age, said Master Sgt. Aaron S. Giraud, 316th SSPTS kennel master. Current handlers have the first option to adopt dogs, and then it goes to prior handlers.
Giraud said the next option is a K9 rescue organization on the civilian side, and there is also a “MWD Adoptions” page on Facebook.
