Strategic Systems Programs Announces Dr. David Shaw as Newest Scientific and Professional Member

Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) recently announced Dr. David Shaw as its newest scientific and professional (ST) team member.

In his new role as the Navy’s distinguished engineer for the Nuclear Submarine-Launched Cruise Missile (SLCM-N) Program, Shaw is the principal technical authority and senior civilian advisor on all aspects of the SLCM-N weapon system. This includes the initial design stage and development to manufacturing, testing, and evaluation.

As the SLCM-N chief engineer, Shaw is responsible for establishing and enforcing rigorous scientific and engineering disciplines, processes, and standards for the program. Reporting to the deputy director for Regional Strike Systems and the director of SSP, Shaw provides technical leadership ensuring the safety, performance, and uncompromising quality of the critical SLCM-N weapons system being developed to provide the nation with an asymmetrical warfighting advantage.

Shaw brings 19 years of experience in research, development, acquisition, and sustainment of conventional hypersonic and nuclear weapon systems. Since joining SSP in 2017, Shaw has held several positions within the command’s Trident D5 Program, including leading multiple technical investigations and managing key programmatic facets of the deployed strategic weapon system (SWS). Prior to his current position, Shaw served as the section head for the Common Hypersonic Glide Body (C-HGB), playing a crucial role in the design, implementation, and integration of the C-HGB into the Conventional Prompt Strike weapon system, an advanced regional strike capability developed by SSP.

Shaw joins three other Scientific and Professional (ST) personnel within SSP. STs are technical experts that are engaged in research and development in the physical, biological, medical, or engineering sciences, or a closely related field.

Shaw earned his doctorate degree in chemical engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder; is a member of the government’s highly respected Senior Executive Service; and serves as a lieutenant in the Navy Reserve. Vice Adm. Johnny Wolfe Jr., the Director for SSP, said in his email announcing Shaw’s selection he is thrilled to have Shaw’s expertise and looks forward to the SLCM-N program progressing under his guidance.

SSP is the Navy command responsible for sustaining the strategic weapon system (SWS) on the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) and supporting the integration of the D5LE weapon system on the new Columbia-class SSBNs. Looking to the future, SSP is actively modernizing the sea-based leg of the nuclear triad through development of the D5LE2 SWS and pioneering regional strike capabilities of the future through development of the nuclear-armed sea launched cruise missile and the non-nuclear hypersonic conventional prompt strike system.
