Alaska’s top command gains new senior leader

Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska – U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Robert D. Davis took command of Alaskan North American Aerospace Defense Command Region, Alaskan Command and Eleventh Air Force during a change of command ceremony Oct. 15, 2025, at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska.

The change of command ceremony was presided by Gen. Gregory Guillot, commander NORAD and U.S. Northern Command.

“Alaska is arguably the United States’ most important center of military power critical to American national security,” said Guillot. “I look forward to watching Lt. Gen. Davis apply his incredible experience tailored to assume this command at this time, and to lead the men and women of Alaskan NORAD Region and Alaskan Command.”

U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Case A. Cunningham relinquished command after serving for 14 months as the senior military officer in Alaska from August 2024 to October 2025. Cunningham oversaw the operationalization of the combined headquarters, deepened ties with partners and Allies in the region, sharpened the military’s arctic capabilities in the Alaskan Theater of Operations (AKTO), and strengthened the readiness of Pacific Air Forces.

“Serving as commander of these three commands and serving alongside each of you has been the honor of my career. Thank you all for the privilege of leading you, learning from you and serving beside you,” said Cunningham.

Cunningham will become the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, at the Pentagon, Arlington, Virgina. He will lead development and implementation of policy directly supporting global operations, force management, training and readiness for the Air Force.

Davis was previously the director of operations for USNORTHCOM, at Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado. Davis is a command pilot with over 2,800 flight hours including 300 combat flight hours and is qualified in fighter and cargo aircraft including the F-15C and D models, F-22, F-16C and D models, C-17 and other military training aircraft.

Davis graduated and received his commission from Texas A&M University in 1996. He has held multiple commands including in Alaska as commander of the 525th Fighter Squadron in 2013, and commander of 3rd Wing from August 2018 to July 2020. He has served as a commander while deployed and also served on Major Command and Combatant Command staffs.

Davis plans to build on the work of Cunningham, continuing to ensure homeland defense, power projection and readiness of forces in the AKTO and Indo-Pacific regions.

During the change of command ceremony, Davis gave his first remarks as commander to the joint and bi-national forces.

“To the men and the women ALCOM, ANR and Eleventh Air Force, you are at the intersection of the top two national defense priorities of this administration – Homeland Defense and deterring Chinese aggression,” said Davis. “The United States and Canada demand that we defend North America, Hawaii, and Guam – those installations, service members and families – while simultaneously demonstrating our ability to project and employ overwhelming combat power anytime, anywhere. You’ve already demonstrated your ability to do this.  I’m happy to be on your team and I can’t wait to watch you take it to the next level.”
