FORT CARSON, Colo. — Fort Carson’s Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (DFMWR) has been awarded the 2025 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management.

The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) award is the highest honor in the field and celebrates DFMWR’s commitment to enriching the lives of Soldiers, Families and civilians through world-class programs, events and facilities. The award was presented Sept. 17, 2025, during the 2025 NRPA Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida. DFMWR Director Ryan Noble said the award is a gold standard that embodies the culture of what MWR is for the Front Range community.

“The award shows appreciation and recognition for the commitment and hard work that (our staff does) on a day-to-day basis,” said Noble. “It really embodies what we are, as MWR civilians, in providing the gold standard to our teammates.”

The Armed Forces category for the NRPA Gold Medal award was introduced in 2013 and is the highest award recognized by MWR.

This is the fourth year Fort Carson MWR was named as a finalist for the award, but the first year being recognized as the Grand Plaque winner.

Noble said MWR’s vision statement is what set Fort Carson apart on the global stage. “An elevated experience where passion meets purpose means that our employees provide a positive experience for our community members,” said Noble.

MWR employs 650 people and encompasses four divisions: Army Community Service, Child Youth Services, Business Recreation Division and Non-Appropriated Fund Support Division.

Randy Mulder, DFMWR deputy, said the directorate homed in on other services, such as social services and child and youth programming.

“(We didn’t) just necessarily focus on exercise and well-being, but also some of those intangible pieces that sometimes go forgotten that we’re kind of doing on the back end that helps Families when Soldiers are deployed,” said Mulder.

Fort Carson MWR can’t submit for the award again for five years.

“Now that we won it, we will definitely be submitting again,” said Noble. “It’s not only a testament to the team, but it also showcases to the community what we are capable of.”

Noble said MWR will continue refining its programs and services.

“I think the community should expect us to be constantly evolving, constantly leaning forward on trends and constantly evaluating ourselves and reflecting on ourselves to better serve the community down the road,” said Noble.
