JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska – Alaskan Command successfully conducted a joint maritime operation, Oct. 16, with the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Kimball (WMSL 756) and two U.S. Air Force B-1 bombers in the Bering Sea along the Aleutian Island Chain. This operation demonstrated the capability of U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) and its mission partners to deter maritime threats to the homeland.
The mission was conducted in coordination with partners from the United States Coast Guard Arctic District, U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM), and the Alaskan NORAD Region.
The Alaskan Command-led operation was executed by the 611th Air Operations Center, supported by Alaska Air National Guard assets, and featured the USCGC Kimball and U.S. Navy providing target information to the B-1 bombers which enabled standoff target acquisition and simulated weapons employment. A U.S. Air Force E-3 Sentry from the 3rd Wing also participated in the operation, providing airborne command and control and validating multiple targeting information communication pathways.
“Alaska is critical terrain for U.S. Homeland Defense Operations and power projection into the Indo-Pacific and Arctic regions,” said Lt. Gen. Robert Davis, commander, Alaskan Command. “Operating in the Bering Sea ensures our forces remain ready to deter and defend against evolving threats, while demonstrating our commitment to safeguarding the northern approaches to the United States."
As a subordinate unified command of USNORTHCOM, Alaskan Command leads Homeland Defense operations in the Alaskan Theater of Operations. This joint operation highlights the enduring partnerships between the Department of War and Department of Homeland Security, and reinforces the capability of USNORTHCOM to detect, deter, and if necessary, defeat threats to North America with seamless integration between multiple combatant commands and mission partners.
