CAMP SCHWAB, OKINAWA, Japan – On Sept. 1, 2025, five U.S. Marines with 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, forward deployed with 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, as a part of the Unit Deployment Program, provided vital medical aid to an Okinawan local involved in a motorcycle accident in downtown Nago.

“We were waiting by a bus stop out in town just trying to figure out the schedule, when someone pointed out that a local Okinawan man got into a pretty serious accident,” said Sgt. Jacob Carey, a rifleman with 4th Marine Regiment and a Florida native.

The accident, causing the man to fall off his motorcycle, occurred in a four-way intersection.

“The first thing that came to my mind was we had to help this guy,” said Cpl. Joseph Marks, a rifleman with 4th Marine Regiment and a Florida native, “When we walked up, he was up stumbling around and holding his head as blood was running down his neck.”

As the group of Marines continued to assess the man’s condition and help keep pressure on the wound, Lance Cpl. Allen Corbett, a rifleman with 4th Marine Regiment and Michigan native, ran to the closest convenience store to look for medical supplies.

“I got anything I could that would help us stop the bleeding and some water for the man as well,” said Corbet. “It was really stressful, and a lot of people had gathered around where the accident took place when I got back. A lot of people looked like they were in shock.”

The Marines, through the language barrier, signaled to several of the local Okinawans around to call emergency services.

“We kept checking his pupils for dilation, signs of internal swelling, anything we could do while we waited for the emergency medical services to get there,” said Carey. “We kept asking him if it was okay to help, because we wanted to be respectful of the culture.”

Once EMS arrived, the man was transported to a local hospital for follow-on care.

“In moments like that, as Marines, I don’t think any of us thought about it; we just reacted,” said Carey. “We know if someone needs help, it’s almost natural for us to immediately do whatever we can.”

During a battalion formation on September 5th, 2025, Sgt. Louis Romeo, Cpl. Joseph Marks, and Lance Cpl. Allen Corbett were awarded impact Navy Achievement Medals, and Sgt. Jacob Carey and Cpl. Joshua Joyner received Certificates of Commendation for their actions.

“If it were any other Marines in the same situation we were in, I believe they would do the exact same thing,” said Carey.
