On the morning of Sept. 21, 2025, two C-17s carrying more than 200 veterans landed at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, to conclude the final events of Operation Honor. This initiative began 20 years ago when Capt. Earl Morse, a Veterans Affairs physician assistant, had the idea to fly veterans to the National Capital Region to view historic memorials. The first flight departed with 12 veterans in six aircraft.
Twenty years later, the program has achieved over 300,000 veteran experiences as it honors WWII, Korean, Cold War and Vietnam veterans. U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. David W. Smith, deputy to the chief of Air Force Reserve, Col. Jun S. Oh, 316th Wing and installation commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Kevin Helms, 316th Wing command chief, greeted veterans on the flight line as they deboarded planes and boarded buses to complete the weekend events.
