FORT DRUM, N.Y. – Soldiers, families and leaders from across the 10th Mountain Division (LI) gathered at Sexton Field on Fort Drum, Sept. 26, 2025, to witness a time-honored military tradition: the brigade-level change of command ceremony for 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (LI).
During the ceremony, the brigade colors were formally passed from Col. Daniel P. Kearney, outgoing commander of 1st BCT, to Maj. Gen. Scott M. Naumann, commanding general of the 10th Mountain Division, who then entrusted them to Col. Douglas M. Graham, the incoming 1BCT commander. The passing of the colors is a symbolic act signifying the transfer of responsibility, authority and accountability from one leader to another.
Naumann addressed the formation and attendees as the guest speaker, highlighting the impact of Kearney’s leadership.
“Over the last two years, the Warrior Brigade has excelled in every mission, setting the standard for excellence and professionalism,” said Naumann. “Under Dan’s leadership, the Warrior Brigade served our nation with distinction at home and while deployed.”
Naumann also emphasized the importance of continuity in leadership and expressed full confidence in Graham’s abilities to guide the brigade forward.
“As one experienced leader departs, we welcome another distinguished leader into our ranks,” he said. “Col. Douglas Graham brings a wealth of experience, a proven track record of success and a deep commitment to the values that define our division. Welcome to our team—I have no doubt that the Warrior Brigade will continue to thrive and excel under your leadership.”
Kearney, who led the brigade through multiple large-scale training events, modernization efforts and operational deployments, reflected on his time in command and expressed his appreciation to the Soldiers and leaders he served alongside.
“I’m overwhelmed with pride and gratitude for the incredible journey we’ve shared,” said Kearney. “Serving alongside the finest Soldiers in the Army has been the honor of a lifetime.”
Graham, acknowledged the responsibility of leading one of the Army’s most storied light infantry brigades.
“As your new commander, I bring you a simple promise: we will honor our heritage by facing the realities of today,” said Graham. “We will lead with integrity, trust and respect. We’ll care fiercely for each other and our families, linking how we fight to why we fight. We’ll train hard so we can fight easy.”
The ceremony concluded with Graham formally assuming command, marking a new chapter in the history of the Warrior Brigade.
