Three members of the District of Columbia National Guard came to the aid of an injured motorcyclist on I-395, September 25, 2025.
Brig. Gen. Leland Blanchard, Sgt. 1st Class Jurgen Soekhoe and Maj. Collin Welch encountered a man who had been injured in a motorcycle incident and was stranded on the highway. Without hesitation, the Guardsmen stopped to render assistance.
“Once again, our Soldiers demonstrated that they represent the best of our nation and our community. Always ready to step up regardless of the situation, they were there when needed. I am proud of the team and happy to have played a small part,” said Brig. Gen. Leland Blanchard, commanding general of the D.C. National Guard.
They quickly assessed the situation, asking if the rider needed help, before moving his motorcycle out of traffic to prevent further danger.
Together, they directed vehicles safely around the scene and treated the motorcyclist’s injuries until emergency responders arrived.
The Guardsmen remained with the civilian, ensuring his safety and providing critical first aid. Arlington Police Department officers arrived on scene and took over care.
The swift actions of Blanchard, Soekhoe and Welch prevented additional hazards on a busy interstate and provided much-needed support in a moment of crisis.
"Seeing a fellow citizen in need excites the natural instinct to protect and serve those in our community...part of being a service member means we use our training to better serve our citizens,” said Sgt 1st Class Jurgen Soekhue, D.C. National Guard Liaison Officer (LNO). We are grateful for the opportunity to do a bit of good and ensure that man didn’t sustain further injury or loss of property."
