MANAMA, Bahrain – Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) welcomed Mauritius as the 47th member of the world’s largest maritime security partnership, Aug. 12.
“Your membership in CMF is a testament to Mauritius’ commitment to the rules-based international order and freedom of navigation,” said CMF commander, U.S. Navy Vice Adm. George Wikoff. “We look forward to further developing our military-to-military relations and expanding our multilateral cooperation.”
The Republic of Mauritius is an island country approximately 500 miles east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean which has sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago, where U.S. Navy Support Facility Diego Garcia is located. The Mauritius Coast Guard primarily conducts search-and-rescue missions and surveillance of territorial waters.
As the 47th member of CMF, Mauritius will augment a CMF headquarters staff and five combined task forces (CTFs). The CMF task forces focus on defeating terrorism, preventing piracy, encouraging regional cooperation and promoting a safe maritime environment.
Task forces include CTF 150, focused on maritime security in the Gulf of Oman, Arabian Sea and eastern Gulf of Aden; CTF 151, which leads regional anti-piracy efforts; CTF 152, dedicated to maritime security in the Arabian Gulf; CTF 153, responsible for maritime security in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandeb, and western Gulf of Aden; and CTF 154, which enhances maritime security training throughout the region.
In addition to expanding the coalition’s global reach in 2025, CMF continues its endeavors to remain ready and agile to respond to non-state facing threats through technological advances, and has recently introduced the integration of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) under Silent Sentinel Operations, simultaneously in the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf, to enhance surveillance capabilities. The latter part of this year will also see another iteration of Operation Compass Rose, which provides vital maritime security training to unify practices among the member nations and further Saildrone operations.
CMF promotes security, stability and prosperity across approximately 3.2 million square miles of international waters, which encompass some of the world’s most important shipping lanes. The now 47 nations that comprise CMF are not bound by either a fixed political or military mandate.
