FORT GORDON, Ga – A team of six soldiers from U.S. Army Cyber Command will participate in the 2025 U.S. Army Best Squad Competition taking place in Fort Bragg, N.C. Oct. 3-12.
“We are here to show everybody else in the Army that cyber can be physically tough,” said Army Staff Sgt. Kevin O’Neill, an electric warfare specialist and squad leader for ARCYBER team, “I do feel there’s a stereotype regarding cyber and not being all that fit since we sit behind keyboards. As you can see, we get out here and we train.”
The ARCYBER squad consist of three cyber operations specialist, one electronic warfare specialist, a wheeled vehicle mechanic and a signals intelligence analyst.
"Iron sharpens iron, it’s really helpful to have these group of guys all together because we are strengthening each other.” said Spc. Oscar Gonzalez, a signals intelligence analyst. “When you're around such a group of high caliber people, it pushes you to do more than what you normally can do.”
Cardio and strength training has been at the core of the ARCYBER squads regimen.
O’Neill said the squad tries to between 20 to 40 miles a week between running and rucking.
“Going from the motor pool to rucking and running, doing obstacle courses and land navigation with these guys has been a good change of scenery,” said Spc. Jacob White, a wheeled vehicle mechanic, “As a soldier, we all do these tasks, but it’s not often done so hyper focused.”
The competition tests squad on different fitness and combat related events. This includes weapons lanes, a 12-mile foot march and other individual warrior tasks and squad battle drills.
However, members of the squad think their mental ability to adapt and overcome may help bring ARCYBER the win.
The U.S. Army Best Squad Competition promotes the idea soldiers never fight alone. Members of each squad forge bonds through hardship and support.
Despite not having resources that resources of a traditional infantry squad, it’s this adaptability mindset which has helped the ARCYBER squad grow into a competitive squad.
“We’ve resourced what we can,” O”Neill said. “I think it is a testament to our overall core as a soldier. Our win at NETCOM [U.S. Army Network Enterprise Technology Command] was a big boost. We went to D.C. to compete and did well there too.”
Sgt. Dylhon Martin, a cyber operations specialist and the squad leader, said more resources will only make the squad better, but the each member showing up to achieve makes all the difference.
“Everyone has the same mentality of getting after it and pushing past what we think can,” Martin continued. “We all train as hard as we can, and it motivates each other to just keep going and doing better.”
“I’m super proud of all of these guys,” said White. “Everyone has given their time on the weekdays and weekends to keep running and training, and we’ve all done really good.”
