Meet the Instructors: From Jersey to the Trails of Camp Bondsteel

On any given evening, the sound of pounding feet, laughter and motivational cheers can be heard from the outskirts of Camp Bondsteel's running trail but this isn’t your typical physical training session.
It’s the Bondsteel Blush Battalion Running Club, an uplifting, soldier-led initiative by two determined soldiers who are not just setting the pace but also reshaping what fitness looks and feels like in a deployed environment.

Led bySgt. Kayla Cordero and Spc. Michelle Lopez-Martinez, of the New Jersey Army National Guard’s 328th Military Police Company, the club isn't just about the physical training, it’s a space to build discipline, resilience and camaraderie among female soldiers.
“We wanted something people actually looked forward to,” said Lopez-Martinez. “A space that was consistent, but always positive and supportive.”
With varied workouts, upbeat music and a focus on encouragement over pace, the club has drawn growing interest amongst female soldiers. Cordero and Lopez-Martinez have created a safe and motivating environment where showing up is more important than how fast you run.
“There's no pressure,” explained Cordero. “You can run, jog or walk and finish at your pace, but the key is showing up and that’s what matters the most.”
Both feel that running has improved not only their physical fitness but their leadership skills and mental toughness as well. Through leading the club, they’ve learned how to motivate others, hold themselves accountable, and inspire others to keep going even when it's hard.
They bring their leadership, passion and personality to the running trail, it’s not all sweat and running. Their diverse backgrounds and energy adds a relatable touch to every run and conversation, making the club feel like a community rather than a workout. Cordero plays the piano while Lopez-Martinez is a former CrossFit competitor and gymnast. So whether you’re chasing a new personal best, building endurance or simply looking for a strong and supportive group of women to run alongside, this is your sign. Come for the workout and stay for the sisterhood. Lace up, show up and discover just how far you can go.
