CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait – Coalition members with Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve honored fallen first responders and victims of 9/11 with a Patriot Day-themed 5K run and a symbolic 110-step tower climb at Camp Arifjan, Sept. 11, 2025.
As they honored those who died, coalition members also reaffirmed their shared mission to stop terrorism, ensure security and stability within the region, and build partner force capacities.
“When the attacks happened, everyone around the world felt it,” said French air force Lt. Romy Schlinger, CJTF-OIR operations liaison officer. “I remember being in France and feeling like my liberty of mind, liberty of speech and liberty of being was trying to be taken, and that is why it’s so important for me to be here and defend all those ideals.”
Camp Arifjan firefighters worked with the Morale, Welfare and Recreation office and the Red Cross to organize the event.
“Today, on Patriot Day, we put on an event for our fallen brothers and sisters who died 24 years ago,” said Joseph Plants, a firefighter at Camp Arifjan. “The people attending have to climb this tower up and down 37 times while wearing the name of one of the people who died that day.”
For Plants, remembrance of today is what being a firefighter is all about.
“On my fire helmet I wear ‘9-11’ embroidered as a solemn reminder of why I’m here and why I’m doing this job,” Plants said. “I’ve been in the fire service for 20 years, and I would never change my career for anything. It’s all because of days like today and the reminder and honor that wearing that helmet gives me.”
For the on-base emergency medical technicians, today is a powerful reminder of the shared commitment from the coalition to oppose terrorism worldwide.
“Terror is unacceptable everywhere around the world,” said Chester Paglicauan, an EMT with the Emergency Medical Services Department at Camp Arifjan. “We are all too familiar with acts of terrorism, and remembering days like today allows us to make sure it doesn’t keep happening.”
“I love doing things like this, because you just know everyone who died that day is looking down on us, smiling, knowing we remember them,” Plants said.
