    Sgt. Wilson's First Deployment Experience

Meet U.S. Army National Guardsman Sgt. Tyler Wilson, a military police (MP) noncommissioned officer currently deployed to Iraq as part of Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR). As part of the 617th Military Police Company under the Kentucky National Guard, Wilson speaks on his role and experience with the task force.

“We are a combat support group,” said Wilson. “Our unit’s mission is to do law and order and force protection on base and maintain entry control points. Convoy security and route clearance are our two biggest things. So anything related to getting troops from point A to point B, that’s our job.”

CJTF-OIR has been around for over a decade. It brings together a multitude of nations with NATO working together with partner forces to defeat ISIS. It is an important deployment, and for many, it is their first time here in support, including Sgt. Wilson.

“I’ve never been deployed before. This is my first one. I’ve really enjoyed it. I’ve met a lot of really good people, my command team’s been awesome, Task Force Elkhound’s been awesome, I enjoy it.”

In CJTF-OIR, various countries in NATO work together through tasks such as advising and training, which builds camaraderie throughout the coalition forces.

“I worked with the French MPs earlier, they’re called the Gendamerie Nationale. They actually act as the federal police for their nation, and they work as military police,” Sgt. Wilson recollected. “During that training, we learned different tactics of how they remove people from vehicles, how they enter and clear buildings. It was a lot of fun. Overall, I have loved working with the foreign nations; it's one of my favorite parts about being here.”

While on deployment, soldiers are away from their families and homes for longer than most have been in their lives. Compounded with the demands of the CJTF-OIR mission, Wilson keeps his mind focused with ways to stay busy.

“I think tactically just staying in shape, knowing your basic warrior tasks, being proficient, and keeping your soldiers up to speed with you,” Sgt. Wilson said. “Mentally, I think you can work on it yourself, but a big part of that is your support group. So the command team, your friends around you, and your peers, that’s a huge part of the mental game. Just keeping the positivity up.”
