By direction of the President of the United States, Colonel Joshua McConkey has been awarded the Legion of Merit, one of the nation’s highest military honors, in recognition of his exceptionally meritorious conduct and outstanding service to the United States Air Force.
The award, effective August 2, 2025, acknowledges Colonel McConkey’s exemplary leadership, strategic acumen, and steadfast dedication. His contributions were instrumental in resolving complex operational challenges of national importance and advancing joint medical capabilities across the Department of Defense.
Colonel McConkey’s dynamic leadership was especially evident during U.S. Transportation Command's Exercise Ultimate Caduceus 2023, where he successfully integrated over 400 joint and interagency partners, significantly strengthening patient movement capabilities on a global scale.
His strategic vision and operational excellence directly supported the safe delivery of life-saving medical care in support of Operations PROSPERITY GUARDIAN, INHERENT RESOLVE, and SPARTAN SHIELD, encompassing over 15,000 flight hours and the movement of more than 90 million pounds of cargo and fuel.
Furthermore, during the Israeli-Hamas conflict, Colonel McConkey’s steadfast leadership, guided by his personal ethos of "Be the Weight Behind the Spear," ensured enhanced coalition medical readiness and rapid patient movement, enabling decisive combat power throughout the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.
The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Colonel McConkey reflect great credit upon himself, the United States Air Force, and the United States of America.
