BAYJI, Iraq (February 13, 2006) -- Gen. Richard A. Cody, Vice Chief of Staff for the Army, came to visit troops at Forward Operating Base Summerall today.

Cody was greeted with enthusiastic cheers from soldiers of 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment and 1st Squadron, 33rd Cavalry Regiment as he asked them "How is Leader Rakkasan doing today?" Both Regiments fall under the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, also known as the Rakkasans, of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).

After greeting the troops, Cody presented select soldiers with awards. Three Purple Hearts, one Army Commendation Medal, five Combat Infantryman Badges, two Combat Action Badges and one Combat Medic Badge were given to deserving Soldiers for their service in Iraq. The General also took the time to perform three promotions for one 1st Lieutenant and two Sergeants.

Lt. Col. Randy George, commander of the 1/187th Infantry Regiment, gave the General a brief overview of the outstanding work the Rakkasans are doing in the Bayji area.

Following the presentations Cody addressed the troops, promising to continue pushing new equipment to Iraq, providing new equipment upon their return home and continuing to improve Fort Campbell.

Cody's visit was brief but affective in boosting the morale of the soldiers. He left the soldiers of FOB Summerall with the following message:

"Your Army leadership is absolutely proud of everything you do. We've got the finest Army in the world, Leader Rakkasan. We've sent you to combat in Afghanistan during [Operation Enduring Freedom], we sent you back here during [Operation Iraqi Freedom I] and your back here again. It is a great outfit with a lot of great history, you got a great commander, .. a great Sergeant Major, [and] great soldiers. You are in a tough area but you are making a heck of a difference. Everybody in America is behind you. You need to know that."
