Soldiers from Task Force Baghdad's 2nd Brigade Combat Team and the 448th Civil Affairs Battalion conducted a humanitarian aid drop in the Nissan district of Iraq's capital Sept. 28. The supplies dropped included pens, pencils, notebooks, backpacks, shoes, toys, personal-hygiene items, antibiotics, and other medical aids. The recipients of the supplies were all special-needs children.
"Some of the children suffered from injuries, and some were born with handicaps and other medical conditions," Army Capt. Todd R. Olsen, 448th CA team leader, said. "(They) seemed very happy and enjoyed receiving gifts from coalition forces."
Following the handout of supplies, Army Capt. Antonio Ortiz, a medical logistics planner with the 26th Forward Support Battalion, addressed some of the children's medical issues and parents' concerns.
By day's end, the team of soldiers had seen 70 parents and children.
Elsewhere, the Iraqi government provided humanitarian aid to residents of Tal Afar, which was the scene of recent fierce fighting between insurgents and Iraqi and coalition forces. The governor of Ninevah province and the mayor of Tal Afar coordinated shipments of over 700 metric tons of food to be distributed to families in Tal Afar and outlying towns.
The Ministry of Transportation delivered the supplies over a two-week period starting Sep. 16. The shipments included 228 tons of flour, 177 tons of sugar, 98 tons of cooking oil, and 210 tons of rice.
Since the humanitarian effort started, nearly 10,000 people have received food in Tal Afar and outlying areas. This humanitarian assistance represents the government's commitment to the safety, security and well-being of Tal Afar residents, officials said.
Elsewhere in Iraq, Iraqi security forces took responsibility for Forward Operating Base Lima from U.S. forces Sept. 28.
Iraqi police, army commanders and government representatives, U.S. representatives, including Army Lt. Col. James Oliver, commander of the 1st Battalion, 198th Armored Brigade, attended the ceremony transferring local security responsibilities to the Iraqi police and the 4th Brigade, 8th Division, Greater Iraqi Army.
In other news, troops from the 2nd Battalion, 114th Field Artillery, have assisted the people of Karbala since mid-January, providing security and infrastructure support. Approximately 68 projects, totaling $21.5 million, have been completed to improve the city. The projects included water, sanitation, education, electrical, medical and humanitarian aid.
The battalion is a U.S. Army unit assigned to the 155th Brigade Combat Team, serving with the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force.
In the air war over Iraq, coalition aircraft provided assistance for Operation Iraqi Freedom on Sept. 29 in the form of 32 close-air-support and armed-reconnaissance sorties.
These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities, and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.
U.S. Air Force F-16s provided close air support to coalition troops in the vicinities of Qaim and Tal Afar. In addition, 12 U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, and Royal Australian Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. U.S. Air Force and British Royal Air Force fighter aircraft also performed in a non-traditional ISR role with their electro-optical and infrared sensors.
