Regional Kandahar Police Center Nearing Completion

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – Built entirely by Afghan labor, work on the $46 million Joint Regional Afghan National Police Center is nearing completion with a grand opening scheduled for mid-September. Located one-half mile southwest of Kandahar Airfield, adjacent to the headquarters of the Afghan National Army 205th Hero Corps, the JRAC will allow Afghan law enforcement agencies to coordinate their efforts in bringing security to Kandahar province.

The 280-acre facility will provide facilities for the Afghan National Police, Afghan Border Patrol, Afghan National Civil Order Police and the Regional Logistics Center. General officers from each police agency met July 22 in the JRAC’s Operational Coordination Center Regional, which will serve as a command post for the agencies to work together to coordinate their efforts.

Officers meeting to discuss progress on the facility included Maj. Gen. Shafiq Fazli, commanding general of the ANP 404 Maiwand Zone; Brig. Gen. Mirwais, deputy commanding general of the ANP 404 Maiwand Zone; Brig. Gen. Tafshir Khugyani, commanding general of the ABP 3rd Zone; and Col. Ghulam Maihodeen, commander of the ANCOP 2nd brigade.

“This building will bring us all together and we will work in unity,” Fazli said.

The OCCR is among the 65 buildings in the JRAC compound that will provide support to the Afghan police agencies. Other key structures include the regional headquarters for the Ministry of the Interior and a regional forensics laboratory to analyze improvised explosive devices and identify their builders, composition, and operation.

U.S. Army Col. Greg Baine, commander of Regional Support Command South, oversees the logistical support and construction contracts for the JRAC, including the office spaces, barracks, dining facilities, laundries and fitness centers each agency will occupy.

“It is a great honor to bring all three of these groups along with the RLC together in one compound for mutual support and cooperation toward the same goals and objectives,” Baine said.

Tafsir said that having all the agencies coordinate their efforts will prove invaluable in providing greater security for the people of Kandahar.

“Police always cooperate with one another, but this camp will bring them together closer and also help them to respond to each other’s needs quicker,” he said.
