POINTE AUX PIMENTS, Mauritius (June 25, 2025) — Military officials from the Kingdom of Morocco joined U.S. Marine Corps Forces Europe and Africa during the 2025 African Maritime Forces Summit to reinforce a longstanding security partnership and expand regional defense cooperation.

As host of Exercise African Lion, Morocco has become a central hub for U.S. and allied military training on the continent. African Lion, one of the largest annual military exercises in Africa, brings together over 50 nations, including seven NATO allies, and 10,000 troops to conduct realistic, dynamic, and collaborative training in an austere environment that spans multiple geographic and functional combatant commands. Attending events such as AMFS is one of the key reasons exercises like African Lion flourish year after year.

AMFS 2025 provided a forum for leaders to evaluate past engagements and explore new opportunities in counterterrorism, amphibious operations, and multilateral interoperability.

“Morocco continues to be a pillar of regional security and a reliable partner in Africa,” said Maj. Gen. Robert B. Sofge Jr., commander of MARFOREUR/AF. “Through African Lion and beyond, we are working shoulder-to-shoulder to build the trust and capability that ensures peace and stability.”

Recent Moroccan-U.S. engagements have integrated air, land, and sea components, strengthening the combined force posture across North Africa and the southern Mediterranean. These exercises showcase the effectiveness of multinational training in complex environments.

Leaders at AMFS also explored emerging challenges in maritime security, regional logistics, and disaster response, and emphasized Morocco’s commitment to collective defense and regional resilience.

“Morocco’s continued engagement reflects not just shared interest, but shared values,” said Sofge. “Their commitment to peacekeeping, regional integration, and readiness makes them an indispensable partner as we build a safer, more resilient Africa.”
