NAVAL BASE WHITE BEACH, Japan – U.S. Marines with 9th Engineer Support Battalion’s Littoral Engineer Reconnaissance Team (LERT) conducted sustainment training with Combat Rubber Raiding Craft (CRRC) and employed the CEESCOPE for the first time during a two-day field exercise at White Beach, June 23-24, 2025.

The training marked a significant step for the unit as they prepare to meet data collection requirements in support of III Marine Expeditionary Force ahead of Resolute Dragon 25, a bilateral exercise with the Japan Self-Defense Forces.

Throughout the field exercise, LERT conducted small boat maneuvers, open-water safety swimmer training and depth surveys using the CEESCOPE, a compact system designed to support beach landing site surveys.

“We are currently using it to project whether we can land certain vehicles such as ACVs [Amphibious Combat Vehicle]. We’re able to see what spots are inadequate for a beach landing and what sites are adequate for a forwarding site for certain vehicles,” said Lance Cpl. Londen Ely, an assistant team leader with the LERT.

Compact, portable, and deployable from small craft, the CEESCOPE provides a depth data collection capability that enhances the unit’s ability to support amphibious planning in austere maritime environments. By integrating this system, LERT strengthens its role as a forward reconnaissance element capable of shaping the littoral battlespace for follow-on forces.

“The CEESCOPE is mounted to the side of a CRRC and is used to collect data from very shallow water all the way to the shoreline. Once we receive tasking to survey a specific area, we select our lanes and begin the collection process,” said 2nd Lt. Mario Chavez, the LERT officer in charge.

This marks the first time LERT has fielded the system, establishing a foundation for persistent littoral sensing and maritime domain awareness.

The same way every Marine is a rifleman, every Marine is a sensor, acting as the eyes and ears of the fleet to relay vital information to those who can use it. The Marine Corps will continue to experiment and wargame with emerging logistics concepts and technologies, providing the appropriate analysis and feedback to affect change.
