BUSAN, South Korea (June 6, 2025) – U.S. Navy Sailors assigned to Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea (CNFK) attended a memorial ceremony honoring lives lost during the Korean War at Hongbeopsa Temple in Geumjeong-gu, Busan, June 6, 2025.
“Our presence at such events significantly strengthens our relationship with the Republic of Korea,” said Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea Chaplain Captain Leroy Young. “We demonstrate genuine respect for our host nation's traditions and values by participating in culturally and religiously significant observances. This builds mutual trust and goodwill and underscores our responsibility and commitment to fostering understanding and respect in international relations."
The seven CNFK Sailors attending observed traditional Buddhist prayers and rituals conducted by monks as part of the ceremony. The event included a prayer delivered by CNFK Command Chaplain Lt. Cmdr. Stephen Chapman, marking the first time a U.S. Navy chaplain participated in the event.
“This ceremony represents a continued commitment to honoring those who sacrificed their lives in defense of freedom,” said Religious Program Specialist 1st Class Scarlett Seneta.
CNFK is the U.S. Navy’s representative in the Republic of Korea, providing leadership and expertise in naval matters to improve institutional and operational effectiveness between the two navies and to strengthen collective security efforts in Korea and the region.
