NAVAL AIR STATION SIGONELLA, Sicily (July 1, 2025) – Naval Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) Fleet Logistics Center Sigonella (FLCSI) will celebrate the U.S. Navy’s 250th birthday this year while also recognizing one of their Sailors, Retail Specialist 2nd Class Julissa Barrera.
Barrera, from Cumming, Georgia, enlisted November 27, 2017, to meet new people, travel, and gain valuable life experiences.
“Having RS2 here at the Fleet Mail Center (FMC) has been a tremendous help,” said Chief Retail Specialist Vanessa Anderson, FMC leading chief petty officer. “Her knowledge and experience have set a standard we intend to maintain here at NAVSUP Sigonella.”
According to Anderson, Barrera’s work ethic has informed the operations at NAVSUP FLCSI, one she hopes will inspire the Sailors and Marines who will fill her shoes.
Barrera said her proudest accomplishment in the service was making petty officer 2nd class in five years.
For Barrera, serving in the military means she is, “…setting a standard for my younger family members. I can serve as a role model for them.”
Barrera works at NAVSUP FLCSI’s FMC on Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella 2, where a majority of service members pick up their mail. Her duties include processing incoming and outgoing mail for deployed units and personnel within the Navy Region Europe, Africa, Central theater.
“Every day is new, and it keeps me on my toes,” Barrera said. “[Being in the Navy] has helped me to think quickly and act on a moment’s notice.”
Additionally, RS2 Barrera holds the position of Command Public Affairs Officer Assistant in a collateral duty capacity, where she enjoys taking photos during command events to showcase strength and camaraderie.
As a role model, she takes pride in communicating with and listening to those around her.
“When someone speaks, listen,” said Barrera. “Listen to their voice…listen to what they might not say with words.”
Barrera plans to separate into the reserves this November, eight years since her enlistment, and pursue a degree in business logistics.
When she’s not at work, Barrera spends her time in Sicily playing guitar and softball. She also travels to new countries twice a month.
Barrera’s favorite quote comes from the movie ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,’ where the title character says, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
