During Bungay’s time in command, he has mentored several command officers as the Kansas City’s training hull CO. Kansas City has transited over 5,000 nautical miles, completed more than 40 restricted waters transits, and executed 5 underway replenishments. He fostered a culture of excellence onboard, rightly regarding Kansas City as the Gold Standard Training Ship.
“Outstanding leadership and operational success led to you being hand-selected by Vice Admiral McLane to take major command early as the Naval Base San Diego commanding officer,” said Capt. Jose Roman, commodore, Littoral Combat Ship Squadron One. “A clear testament to the trust and confidence senior leadership has in your abilities.”
During the ceremony, Bungay was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his superior accomplishments and will be reporting as Naval Base San Diego’s commanding officer.
“From the moment I took command, I knew I was surrounded by Sailors of skill, integrity, and unshakable resolve,” said Bungay “Together, we’ve navigated challenges, upheld the highest standards, and strengthened the reputation of this mighty warship. I could not be prouder of the work we accomplished over the last two years.”
Bungay, a native of Modesto, California, was raised in Australia, Philippines and Japan. He commissioned through the NROTC program and graduated from the University of Southern California in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and a Bachelor of Arts in History. He holds a Master of Arts in Human Resources Management from Webster University.
Kansas City is homeported in San Diego as a part of Littoral Combat Ship Squadron One.
