Sebastian von Münchow, Marshall Center professor for regional security studies, took part in the “Toward a Secure European Area in a Globalized World: The Security – Rule of Law Nexus” conference in Tetova,
Republic of North Macedonia, from June 2-3, 2025.

Münchow opened a panel on cooperation in times of strategic change, emphasizing the need for European-led defense and a resilient European defense industrial base.

The conference brought together scholars, security officials, and international representatives for substantive dialogue on Europe’s strategic future.

“I have been involved in some previous activities with the Marshall Center, and I am thankful that Sebastian could play a vital role to make this conference happen and finally to address this high-level audience," said Aleksandar Ivanov, professor at the Faculty of Security in Skopje. "We stand together and we aim to become a self-reliant partner to our transatlantic friends.”

The event drew a distinguished crowd, including Zoran Dimitrovski, minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of North Macedonia; Igor Nedelkovski, rector of the University of St. Kliment Ohridski–Bitola; Jusuf Zejneli, rector of the University of Tetova; Ambassador Petra Drexler of the German Embassy; and Ben Nupnau, deputy head of the EU Delegation in North Macedonia.

Jointly organized by two universities that traditionally serve different communities, the conference marked their first academic collaboration. Panels explored topics including European integration, Russia’s regional role, and post-conflict peacebuilding.

Engagements like this extend the Marshall Center’s intellectual reach and sharpen its operational edge – building trusted networks and strengthening regional capacity where it matters most.
