FORT CAVAZOS, Texas – An Army civilian budget analyst was recognized for helping to keep the U.S. Army’s only operational active-duty Chemical Brigade ready to accomplish lifesaving and mission-enabling operations across the nation and around the world.

Zachary R. Chandler, a budget analyst for the 48th Chemical Brigade, was recently selected as the 20th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives (CBRNE) Command Civilian of the Quarter.

The 48th Chemical Brigade “Spartans” are part of the 20th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives (CBRNE) Command, the U.S. military’s premier multifunctional and deployable CBRNE headquarters.

Soldiers and civilians from the 20th CBRNE Command take on the world’s most dangerous hazards in support of joint, interagency and multinational operations.

Providing support for a geographically dispersed Chemical Brigade with a global mission is no small feat. The Fort Cavazos, Texas-headquartered 48th Chemical Brigade commands four battalions and 15 companies with highly trained units stationed on nine bases in eight states.

Chandler said he was proud to serve in the brigade with one of the largest budgets within the 20th CBRNE Command.

“The highlight of my job is being able to work directly with Soldiers to help resolve some of their complex travel issues,” said Chandler. “I also like training subordinate travel clerks on regulatory guidance to achieve full audit compliance.”

“Serving with the 48th Chemical Brigade is particularly rewarding due to the scale of responsibility and the direct impact I can have on Soldiers,” said Chandler.

Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, Chandler retired from the U.S. Army in 2023. He also served in the Mississippi Army National Guard.

Chandler served as both a Financial Manager and Comptroller in the Army and deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

After earning an associate’s degree in criminal justice, Chandler is pursuing at bachelor’s degree from Purdue University.

“Having developed specialized skills and knowledge during my time as a Soldier, I am motivated to continue utilizing those capabilities to support those currently serving,” said Chandler. “Transitioning to a civilian role allows me to maintain my commitment to the warfighter, simply in a different capacity.”

Chandler said he plans to continue his service as an Army civilian.

“Looking ahead, I aim to become a Senior Budget Analyst where I can leverage my analytical abilities and problem-solving skills to optimize resource allocation,” said Chandler. “I'm particularly interested in contributing to strategic financial planning and ensuring the responsible use of funds to support mission objectives.”
