FORT BELVOIR, Va. — As the Army moves to future-proof Joint and coalition interoperability and warfighting capabilities with a strong, secure, unified and resilient global network, Product Manager Global Enterprise Network Modernization-OCONUS (PdM GENM-O) recently completed a large network modernization (NETMOD) project significantly improving the network with better equipment and newer hardware for U.S. and NATO bases operating in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg (BENELUX).

The BENELUX NETMOD project, completed on March 3, optimizes the network for thousands of users in the region by injecting advanced technologies into the network such as modernized edge access switches capable of generating higher throughputs, newer server and communication rooms that reinforce physical and cyber protection against attacks, and creating additional network access points to mitigate single points of failure.

Prior to PdM GENM-O’s modernization project, forces and supporting elements in the region relied on an aging and somewhat archaic network infrastructure limited in its ability to meet the demands of current and future missions.

“We modernized the network for the entire BENELUX footprint which covers seven different countries,” said Adam Case, Assist Program Manager for PdM GENMO. “It covers 2,000 or more users, we created diversity in the network, and the connections we are making creates dual links for every single switch,” where if one link to the network fails, the other link kicks in ensuring the user remains operational.

“That’s pretty important especially for military operators,” Case said. “They need to be able to stay up and continue to work.”

The BENELUX NETMOD project covered Chievres Air Base, the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, USAG Brussels, which includes Sterrebeek and the NATO headquarters in Brussels, and Brunssum, which includes Joint Forces Command Brunssum and USAG Brunssum.

“When you add it all up, this project has a huge impact on U.S. Army network modernization in the European Theater,” Case said.

Key stakeholders—including PdM GENM-O, PM IEN, 39th Strategic Signal Battalion, 2nd Theater Signal Brigade, and U.S. Army Garrison (USAG) Benelux—marked the end of the project in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Chièvres Air Base in Belgium, a key asset for command, control, communications and logistics in support of U.S. and NATO forces across the region.

At a recent PM IEN town hall meeting at Fort Belvoir, Va., Col. Justin Shell, the program manager for PM IEN, applauded the completion of the project and thanked his PdM GENM-O team for their hard work in reaching this milestone.

“I had the auspicious honor to help GENM-O ribbon cut [the completion of] their critical network modernization over there in Belgium, a key enabler for all of NATO,” Shell said. “It was really exciting to see the great work Team GENM-O did over there.”

The BENELUX NETMOD was managed by PdM GENM-O, assigned to Project Manager Integrated Enterprise Network (PM IEN), within Program Executive Office Command, Control, Communications, and Network (PEO C3N).

The U.S. Army Program Executive Office Command, Control, Communications, and Network (PEO C3N) develops, acquires, fields and supports the Army's Unified Network (Tactical and Enterprise) to ensure force readiness in both current missions and potential future large scale combat operations. This critical Army modernization priority delivers resilient terrestrial and satellite communications capabilities to ensure commanders and Soldiers remain connected and informed at all times, even in the most austere and hostile environments. PEO C3N is delivering an integrated Unified Network to regions around the globe, enabling high-speed, high-capacity voice, data and video communications to an Army user base that includes joint, coalition and other mission partners.
PdM GENM-O’s mission to deliver modernized network infrastructure, voice, video, data and command center capabilities aligns with the Army’s Network Modernization Strategy and the Army Unified Network Plan 2.0.
